LNG- the bunker fuel of the future
The number of LNG-powered ships is increasing due to stricter emission regulations that are implemented globally.
Since 2015 the SECA (Sulphur Emission Control Areas) limits the value of sulfur in the North and Baltic sea and all European ports to 0.1% . Next to this, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has decided to tighten the sulphur emission to a maximum of 0,5% from january 2020 on globally. Further, all ships being built after 2021 have to comply to a strict NOx (nitrogen) emissions regime .
LNG is the only environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to conventional oil-based fuels like HFO, MDO and MGO for ships. Systems that filter the emissions are costly and require a lot of space on board.
